College Counseling Overview
Choosing a college is a complex and challenging task for students and their families. Baylor's College Counseling Office is in the business of enabling students to see and understand a match, and then assisting them in making that match with colleges throughout the application process.
Where We Begin
At Baylor, the formal college counseling process begins in the ninth grade, with students and counselors meeting in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one sessions to assess student interests, discuss career goals, weigh the importance of factors such as location, cost, size, and extracurricular activities, all to gain a sense of the range of selectivity a student should have in mind in his or her research of colleges.
Next Steps
In the sophomore year the emphasis is placed on course selection. We encourage our students to select a list of courses that will challenge them both academically and we believe in the ability of all of our students to achieve success but at the same time, we have realistic ideas for college acceptance.
The Foundation for Success
In the junior year, the college process becomes a bit more intense. Students attend a series of courses that center on the college application process. College Counselors discuss topics relative to the college application essay, selecting the "right" college, testing, and the all important application and interview process.
Final Steps
The senior year is more relaxed. This year, students will refine their list, complete the applications, and spend time visiting various colleges and universities as part of college visits and scholarship interviews. With the assistance of Naviance and our Family Connection, we can access students' chances of admission into various institutions based on Baylor graduates.
