Boarding schools are well known for their academic excellence and Baylor is no exception. In addition to small class sizes, a diverse curriculum, and individual attention from teachers and advisers, our boarding students enjoy the distinct advantage of having an "extended family" that includes some of the greatest teachers in the country and students from around the world. This 24-hour community allows our residential life faculty to seize every teachable moment whether in the classroom, around the dinner table, or in the dorm.

A Supportive Community
Being "on your own"; for the first time means great freedom, and even greater responsibility. To keep the experience from being overwhelming, the Baylor support network is vast. Our dormitories (three for boys and three for girls) are staffed by teachers who serve as dorm parents, providing continuous support and encouragement. As with all Baylor students, boarders are assigned an academic adviser, who meets with them several times throughout the week to establish goals, monitor progress, and discuss various issues. In addition, dorm parents and other families who live on campus take a genuine interest in the well-being of our boarders, and are almost always available to offer advice. Families Assisting Boarding Students (FABS) matches boarding students with local Chattanooga families, offering a second "home away from home."

Growth Beyond the Classroom
Boarding students enjoy a combination of academic rigor and real-world experience. They can spend afternoons tutoring inner-city children, compete on championship athletic teams, travel abroad to study at art institutes, or embrace the challenges of the outdoors through weekend kayak and rock climbing expeditions. With more than 30 extracurricular activities to choose from, the Baylor experience becomes personalized and suited to the student's individual interests.

The Boarding Experience

Recent research released from The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) provides solid data that breaks down long-held misperceptions about boarding schools.

College Prep, Life Prep

Most secondary schools focus on preparing students for the academic rigors of college life, but only a select few prepare students for living on their own. According to our boarding students, Baylor does both. They report that the Baylor boarding experience facilitates the transition to higher education, making students more independent, organized, self-confident, and better prepared to make decisions on their own. Plus they arrive armed with better study habits than many of the day school counterparts they meet in college.
